Don't steal from Wal-Mart!!!

May 8, 2007 -- Lisa King Fithian is a walking billboard against shoplifting as she parades in front of a Wal-Mart in Attalla, Ala. - her penalty for stealing. A judge ordered her and another shoplifter to stand outside the store wearing the sign for four hours for two successive Saturdays to avoid serving 60 days in jail.

What a stupid judge. It's obvious that she doesn't care about this punishment and is thinking about how cool it is that she got off with even less than a slap on the wrist.

Most people don't get 60 days in jail anyway. I think this is more harsh than the typical punishment given for shoplifting. Usually it's just a fine.

If she got this along with a fine, then i'll agree that it sucks.

If she got this INSTEAD of a fine, then I still say she got off very lightly.

Maybe it's just me, but I think embarrassment is a more effective punishment. Jail time would use up tax money. Public humiliation costs nothing, and will probably keep her from being a repeat offender. More than jail would I guess.

I think the sign idea is a good idea, especially if it is a busy weekend day. The more people the more embarassing, the less likely that individual will do that crime again, at least in my opinion.

It's been my experience that a lot of folks don't give a rat's ass what anybody thinks about them, particularly someone that they don't know. For some, I'd agree that it is a more productive punishment, but for others? Not so much.

If I saw that standing outside of WalMart, I'd think how inviting it might be to steal from WalMart...
