New High-Rise Building To Be Built Downtown

SAN ANTONIO -- A new high-rise apartment complex will be built in downtown San Antonio.

The 14-floor art deco building, which will be called The Vistana, will be located in the 100 block of North Santa Rosa near Milam Park and Market Square.

The building will have retail shops on the first floor, a four-floor parking garage and more than 200 rental apartments.

"We consider them an urban loft-type apartment," said Ed Cross, president of Cross & Co. "Like a loft you would enjoy in New York City or in San Diego."

Reservations for interested renters will be taken late next year.

The building is scheduled to open in late spring of 2008.

It's a beautiful design. You can never go wrong with art deco. Not to mention it's an city block.

The one rendering I am really interested in seeing is the 35 story Kress Tower.

BTW, have any of you see the renderings for the twin 25 story condo highrises, Vidorra?

My opinion is that its not a beautiful design. Yes, Ive seen the drawings for Vidorra.

I've also seen the drawings for the new Grand Hyatt Hotel and its awful!
It looks like a wall, thats it.

Wow! Me likey! I like the retro look. All it needs is a few gargoyles on top. I think that could be my first apartment.

This may be my inner architecture snob talking, but why the crap are they designing an ART DECO building in 2006?!?!?! Art Deco was popular in the 1930's for pete's sake. I enjoy Art Deco a lot, but mainly the original kind. The kind with the fantastic detailing and materials. All this building will do is hold San Antonio back architecturally by being an imitation of the Art Deco style. Okay off my soapbox now. :P

Whew! Glad I'm not the only one who thinks the design is crap.

This is Vidorra:

Twin 25 story buildings to be built on the east side of downtown, just northwest of Sunset Station, across 37.

Also, a 13 story Staybridge Hotel is being built within Sunset Station. That is what that crane north of the Alamodome is.

yeah the grand hyatt is horrible. After the initial newness wears off...its just going to be another concrete building littering the skyline (see Marriott)

bleh.....the tower is okay......the lower floor are ugly as all get out.

It may be the only hotel ever built that BEGS for an street level update 4 weeks after opening.

I liked some of the earlier renditions of a Conv. center hotel much better.

We have a couple of places like that here in Phoenix, around the Biltmore area. Its strange because there are 200K condos in crime & drug infested areas. They are trying desperately to remove all the tweekers and gang bangers. But the current Mayor is against the change. He even went so far as to reject Donald Trump and his 18 story condo-hotel combo. Its a shame. Urban loft-type is code for watch your lexus yuppie, this is still a hell hole.
