No official release info has been announced. The announcement revealing the release date and final specs will be made by Nintendo in September. They have said they plan a Q4 release, which I presume means the literal 4th quarter of the year (October-December), because the fiscal 4th quarter is July 1-September 30, and I don't see the console coming out that early, though I guess it's possible.

They'd have already begun to hype it if it was a late September release.

My money is somewhere between late October and Thanksgiving.

Is the Wii going to be graphically similar to the XBOX 360?

Yeah, exactly. And Nintendo's statement on the matter made it sound like people were getting the final announcement in September confused with a release in September. There was a rumor a while back that a Nintendo exec acidentally revealed a release date from October 30 to early November over drinks with some media guys.

Nintendo has been very, very quiet about the performance of Wii, so we can't really tell yet what its processing power will be compared to Xbox 360, but my guess is no. If you have a HDTV the difference will be more obvious, because Xbox 360 supports up to 1080i output, while Wii is 480p.

The Wii wont be able to output 720p? I thought they were going to have some high def capability?

Regrettably, no.

Video:

* Up to 480p and will work with a computer monitor as well as any TV or projector[23]
* Component (including Progressive scan), composite or S-Video output
* 16:9 support
Nintendo decided that HD isn't ubiquitous enough for them to do it. They did state that their next console (after Wii) will definitely have HD support, but at this point they don't think HD is big enough to merit it. It's really too bad that they didnt decide to support at least 720p, because if they did I would pick Wii, no question. But since it doesn't support HD, I'm exploring other options like Xbox 360.

I just got a HD TV, so this is dissappointing. I am thinking about getting a Wii as a 2nd system, mainly for the classic titles, but there are a few cool looking exclusives as well (Ummm Zelda?). Wow, I seriously thought the Wii was going to be high def.....

I don't think most people have HD yet though.

Yeah really most people don't yet, but it'd still be nice if it had HD capability. Oftentimes, I play my PS2 on my computer monitor with a TV tuner, and while using s-video is pretty good (alot better than composite), direct VGA/DVI would be much better. And since my monitor's resolution is 1280x1024, 720p would be great for it (1280x720p). Wii will still look fine, but I would prefer HD over non-HD.

Most adult GAMERS I know have HD. Just more ammunition for the "Nintendo is for little kids" crowd.

You missed the Hulk's point James...GAMERS (the all-caps means really serious gamers, that just can't settle for video output a shade less than HD) all have HD.
