Traffic Ticket Help

HELP!!!!!

So I moved to San Antonio all of four days ago, and borrowed a relative's car since mine is being shipped from Virginia. It has one of those funny old knobs for turning on the headlights, and at about 1:30 AM I got pulled over by a cop. I'm looking around, clueless as to why I'm pulled over. Cop is all business, gives me a ticket for not having headlights on ($235).

The roads were totally empty, and I felt that if the cop had flashed his lights or done ANYTHING he could have notified me about my lights....I was no danger to anybody because there was no car within a mile any direction.

Also, I had a bottle of root beer in the cup holder and I think the cop was thinking I was driving under the influence (it was at the time bars got out). He had followed me for a little while and was "staking me out", so I think he was waiting (hoping) to see me swerve over a line or something (I hadn't had a drink all day). He asked about it and I showed it was a root beer. eyes

I can't really afford the $235 fine since I just moved here and don't have a job yet, but I was driving without my headlights. Can I contest this or get it reduced? It was an honest mistake since it was my grandmother's car and I had driven it all of a couple of days. The cop could have also easily let me know about my lights without killing my bank account. Does anybody have ANY advice? PLEASE!

man, what a stroke of bad luck, usually they give you a warning before writing up a ticket. Guess he was in a bad mood.

Opt for jail time.

if you go to court, explain everything to the judge just the way you did here.

Worst case......you pay the entire $235.......but tell them you don't have the entire $235 and they should give you payment options where you can pay a little at a time.

you can ask for community service to offset the fine or time served. Ask if you can do four garbage pickup days in place of the fine or if monthly payment options are available. For $235 you can proboblly do one night in the slammer or hit the pawn shop....

I've decided I'm going to go to court. He may not even show up. If he does, I'll just say that I was being safe and responsible, and he could have easily just notified me about my lights. Hope it works.

Hire an attorney. It might cost you anywhere from 30-60 bucks, but they will at the very least get you a reduced fine. Maybe get it dismissed altogether.
