Integrated Wireless Card for Laptop

Does anyone know how these integrated wireless routers card on these laptops. Here is my question. My friend bought a laptop with an integrated wireless card and he says that he can get an internet connection wireless without a wireless router. I keep telling him that is not so because you need a signal somewhere or be at a hotspot. He says he can get a connection from his desktop without a wireless router. Does anyone have any idea how these things work. I think I am right but I would like to know for sure. Thanks.

He's picking up a signal from a nearby wireless router. He should thank his neighbors for the free service.

I 100% totally agree with Texas native. I have some friends that do that. If the router owner isn't smart enough to set up a password, than their asking some one to connect to their network.

And God bless 'em for their ignorance.
