NEW YORK (AP) -- The MasterCard people say they've discovered a massive security breach affecting 40 (m) million holders of all types of credit cards.

MasterCard International says its security division detected multiple instances of fraud that have been traced back to a company in Arizona that processes transactions for banks and merchants.

A MasterCard spokeswoman says the processor was hit by a computer virus that sucked up card numbers and other customer data.

In a news release, MasterCard says about 14 (m) million of its own cards were exposed and that it's tipping off banks that issue its cards.

The breach is the latest in a series that has hurt a number of high-profile companies -- including Citigroup, Bank of America, and D-S-W Shoe Warehouse.
