If you want a classical, you can find one a decent entry level one for about 200 bucks.Try to get one w/ a solid top, they cost a few bucks more but they sound better than the laminate tops. Watch out for pawn shop deals, they don't have a good warranty, and the sales staff rarely has enough knowledge to be of much help to you. Also, their prices are'nt really much of a bargain in most cases, they often set their prices close to the original retail listing and you'd have to haggle from there. Go with a Yamaha, Fender or maybe an Ibanez starter .Where are you taking lessons ? |

i've had my yamaha guitar since 1993 and it still plays well. I am surprised that its lasted this long through many drops, drunked nights, bonfires, and beach jams. I think i paid $150 for it back then and i think they sell for about that price now. If you get an electric get a fender starter pack. most people stop playing after a year or two so try to stck with it. remember, learning is hard. check out this link ofr good guitar tab... www.olga.net

Whatever you do, don't buy one of those starter packs, and don't buy a Squire... they sound like poop! Those lower-end guitars can make a seasoned guitarist sound like a beginner... My advice to you is go to a music shop like Krazy Kats on St Mary's St that sells used guitars and get yourself a used classical in the $100 - $200 range... or if you want an acoustic/electric classical, $200 - $300... look for brands like Cordoba, Takamine, Ibanez, and Fender... if you want to know more about the specific guitar you are looking at, go to http://www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/Data4/#man and look it up by manufacturer then model number and check out the user reviews. Good luck.

well...if you really want a cheap one, you can always look on ebay. Try a yamaha one. Like austin_spurs said they do last very long. I've had mines for about 8 years.

You can get away with spending 90 bucks, but you really will get what you pay for. The best thing to do is get a Yamaha or Ibanez classical -- they aren't anything special, but they'll get you started until you figure out what you actually want from an instrument. Also, I wouldn't bother with getting an electric/acoustic as the pick-ups they intall in classicals ( called piezo electrics ) usually sound pretty crap for most applications. Ebay will be cheaper, but it is difficult shipping delicate guitars like classicals, and it being just past new year's, I'd assume you can get a pretty good deal at Hermes or Sam Ash -- you may also want to call Krazy Kat on N. St. Mary's. The most important thing is getting your bridge and nut ( the little bone-like thingies at the top of the neck and just after the sound-hole ) set up for you. The guy at Century Music on 281 is quite good, as is the guy who does freelance work through Krazy Kat. Set-up included, you should be looking at about 2-300. AndI'll be in York, UK, starting September 05 if you are around there and need lessons. Cheers. |

Krazy Kat has some good used stuff, Spacetone on Austin Hwy., BooLou, both are worth cking. out,' broken in' used acoustics usually sound a little better than a new one of comparable quality. You can stay in the 350-500 dollar range w/ some Ibanez solid tops, but if your going w/ a classical, you might try a 'Rodriguez' they're distributed by Fender, and are pretty darn good for a low to mid range gtr. If you want durability, stay w/ a high gloss polyurethane finished model (they're also cheaper). If your going for tone and volume, you'll probably be going well over the 500 buck range. With the used ones, make sure the frets are even and the nut is in good shape. |

They're fun little guitars, but they ain't no Martin as far as craftsmanship and wood choice are concerned. |
