Yeah, glad it took you guys a century to win the series. You're on a roll now.

Great win by the Sox, but not too surprising. I figure that if I can lose my virginity, anything's possible.

I have mixed feelings about this win. In one regard, I'm happy for the fans of Boston, not necessarily the players. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a city more passionate about a sports team than Boston is about the RedSox. They've had to endure 86 years of heartbreak, San Antonio waited what? 26? When a city and a fan base has been as loyal as these people have to the BoSox, they deserve this night. But now what? It seems the identity of the BoSox for so long has been of the "lovable loser" and the team that "could never get it done". Well, now what? What will they live for now? Certainly another ring next season won't match the joy of this one right? It's very likely they could lose Pedro and Lowe, and may not even make the playoffs next year. It always seemed to me that the story of "The Curse of the Bambino" and how it continued to haunt them, was always more interesting than if Boston actually won. Well now they've won. No more curse. No more Buckner. No more Yaz. No more Bucky. No more Boone. No more. Now, they're just another team. The entire country will never root for this team to win a World Series again. Because they've done it already. So now what? What reason do Bostonians have to get up in the morning? What will they dream of next Spring Training? The curse is over, but so is the BoSox story. Someone wake up The Babe. He's got work to do. |

I see exactly what u are saying. but let me ask you, when spurs won in 99, (assuming u are a spurs fan), did u quit yearning for ur team to win another one ?, or in 2003 , closing seconds of game 6, weren't you just as excited as u were in 99 ? |

I'm so glad they won and were quick about it, now maybe we can get to real sports with real athletes like as in basketball and football. Congrats RedSox for putting an end to the season as quickly as possible!!Bless you!!

Boston has been to the World Series 4 times since 1918, all went 7 games and every time the RedSox lost. Who will ever forget the image of the ball rolling through Bill Buckner's legs? And the fact that he's been a pariah in New England ever since? That's hard core. The 1 game playoff in 79(?) for the right to go to the ALCS. The BoSox are seemingly in control and Bucky Dent breaks their heart. The unforgetable ALCS of 2003. Pedro on the mound, in control, and then BAM! The Yankees rally, and Aaron Boone hammers a home run in his first at bat of the night. Game over, more heartbreak. I don't doubt that the fans will want another title and even another if possible. But the aura around the RedSox, the story and legend that made them the perrenial underdog, the team casual fans rooted for, that baseball purists yearned to see win, all that, is gone now. It goes beyond just winning and losing championships. Unlike any other sports town in America, baseball is a way of life in Boston. Winning titles in San Antonio doesn't compare. Winning in Dallas doesn't compare. Winning in Los Angeles doesn't compare. I don't think winning a championship meant more to any city, than it did to Boston and the fans of the RedSox. And now that the curse is lifted, generations of Bostonians have nothing to dream of and yearn for. Some have nothing to live for, cause they've seen it all now. Where do they go from here? This city seemingly obsessed with breaking a mythical curse? Where do they go from here? Simply winning another championship is almost anti-climactic. Nothing can ever top this feeling they have today. 1918 is just a number now. So in a real sense, an era in Boston has ended. Will the most obsessive fans in America now turn a deaf ear to Fenway Park, simply because the curse has been lifted? To a new generation, the uniqueness that was the never ending "Curse of the Bambino" is now meaningless. A great sports myth has now been vanquished. What if someone suddenly revealed that the "Immaculate Reception" was illegal? What if someone revealed "The Miracle on Ice" was staged? What if someone revealed that some of the greatest moments in sports were now meaningless? What would we do? I don't know if sports fans in San Antonio or anywhere else for that matter, will be able to truly grasp what has finally happened, and what this means to sports lore. I understand Boston fans have a right to be ecstatic today and I hope they enjoy it. I'm genuinely happy for those fans. But when American sports lore loses one of it's great stories and legends, and this legendary "Curse" is rendered meaningless, where do American sports fan, as well as Boston fans, go from here? What now? Last edited by RichB; 10-28-04 at 12:36 PM. |
