There is a large write up on this festival in Friday's Express News Weekender. Here is a blurb about it from the E-N website: Top Ticket: 'Chalk It Up' chalk-art festival Web Posted: 09/26/2004 12:00 AM CDT San Antonio Express-News The sidewalks of Houston Street downtown are scheduled for a major transformation when more than 50 contemporary artists converge for "Chalk It Up," a free, family-oriented chalk-art festival sponsored by ArtPace that will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Houston will be blocked off between Soledad and South Presa streets, including the fronts of the Majestic Theater and San Antonio Children's Museum. The daylong festival features children's activities, sidewalk cafés at area restaurants, DJs for each block and one large mural that the public will be able to help color. Ten featured artists will do large 15-by-25-foot murals: Alex de Leon, Joan Fabian, Joey Fauerso, Daniel Guerrero, Mark Hogensen, Meg Langhorne, Katie Pell, Chuck Ramirez, Regis Shephard and Vincent Valdez. In addition, more than 40 other artists have been invited to do smaller 4-by-6-foot squares. Melita Curphy, who teaches at San Antonio College, will outline a nearly blocklong "big lizard" that the public will be invited to fill in with chalk. About 20 boutiques from around the city will have booths set up, and DJs JJ Lopez, Sean G, DJ Gibb and Prince Klassen will supply the soundtracks. —Dan R. Goddard |
