Tim Duncan will start the Spurs’ three-game road trip in street clothes.
Nursing a chest contusion suffered in the Spurs’ season-opening victory over Memphis, Duncan will sit out tonight’s game at the Los Angeles Lakers, coach Gregg Popovich said.
Boris Diaw will start in Duncan’s place at power forward.
Duncan dressed out for the team’s shootaround this morning at a Los Angeles-area high school, but did not participate fully, Popovich said. The All-Star big man is listed as day-to-day for the remainder of the Spurs’ trip, which continues Saturday at Portland and concludes Tuesday in Denver, though the timetable for Duncan’s return remains fluid.
“Whatever it is, I don’t know,” Popovich said. “When they tell me he’s ready to play, then he’ll play.”
Duncan was injured early in the second half of the Spurs’ 101-94 win over the Grizzlies after catching an accidental elbow from Memphis guard Tony Allen. Diaw scored 12 of his team-leading 14 points after Duncan exited the game.
