7 p.m. Thursday, AT&T Center Broadcast:
Television — TNT; Radio — 1200 WOAI, 1350 KCOR Setting the stage:
At long last, the end of the preseason is upon us. As far as meaningless games go, we could do a lot worse than a first look at the new-look Rockets and their latest All-Star pickup, Dwight Howard. His partnership with James Harden, bolstered by a solid supporting cast, should have more than a little impact on this year’s Western Conference race. Enough to usurp the Spurs? We won’t know for some months, but Thursday will provide a tantalizing appetizer. Who to watch:
Duh. At his best, Howard might be the NBA’s biggest difference-maker not named LeBron James or Kevin Durant. We haven’t seen that version in several seasons, however, as a severe back injury and his free-agent flight from Orlando to Los Angeles to Houston limited his effectiveness. At just 27 years old, fully recovered and settled, Howard should be ready to reclaim his mantle as the best big man in the game.
