Spurs to host training camp at Pop’s alma mater

The Spurs will hold training camp at the alma mater of head coach Gregg Popovich, the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., from Oct. 1-4.

Popovich was a standout player at the Academy, serving as a team captain during his senior season and earning an invitation to the 1972 Olympic team trials. He returned the following year to serve as an assistant coach, the first entry on a resume that will one day place him in the Basketball Hall of Fame.

The Spurs will hold their annual media event on Sept. 30 before departing for Colorado.

They’ll practice in Clune Arena, the same building where Popovich once held court.
The Spurs’ preseason schedule begins on Oct. 9 with a contest against European power CSKA Moscow. The full slate –

Oct. 9: CSKA Moscow, 7:30 p.m.
Oct. 13: Phoenix, 1:30 p.m.
Oct. 14: at Denver, 8 p.m.
Oct. 17: at Atlanta, 6:30 p.m.
Oct. 19: at Miami, 6:30 p.m.
Oct. 22: Orlando, 7:30 p.m.
Oct. 24: Houston, 7 p.m.

They open the regular season at home against Memphis on Oct. 30.
