I don't see any benefit. I'm with you.
If you cut him before that deadline, you could have still brought them back on the veteran minimum salary and saved $2 million. Now, if you amnesty him, he Can't come back.
Maybe he will be used as a trade chip down the line. Doesn't seem likely though.
