Yes, there's a benefit. The $1 million would still count against the cap and (even though you still have to pay it) the full $3 million (+change) doesn't count against the cap. Basically, you pay $2 million to have $3 million in cap room. Not sure the Spurs would do that, but it is a "benefit".
