A few years back, I wrote a piece for my friends at Rotowire called "Confessions of a Rumormonger." It was a fun piece, essentially explaining what those of us who work in sourced reports do behind the scenes. The mechanics of it haven't changed and while how the sausage is made might not interest many -- as long as you keep getting yummy sausage -- there are some lessons to take from it.
