Rhetoric and hullabaloo that always occurs when idealizing the past. Everything has always been corrupt, because human beings are neither entirely good nor evil. Take any figure of history, from politician to Biblical patriarch, and their faults are as blatant as any modern man.
That said, there's been progress in the committee concerning bipartisan reconciliation on the bill, so things are headed the right way in terms of compromise.
