Pet Shop Boys spurn PETA request to change name
CNN flags this article about a bid by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to get the British duo Pet Shop Boys to change its name. The animal-rights group believes that pet stores are bad because dogs, cat and other creatures come from breeders. PETA's suggested name change? Rescue Shelter Boys.
"By agreeing to change your name to the Rescue Shelter Boys, you would help raise awareness about the cruelty involved in the pet trade and encourage your millions of fans to consider giving a home to an abandoned or unwanted animal from an animal shelter," PETA writes in its letter, which the PSB posted on the front page of its site.
Alas, the boys will still be Pet Shop Boys. "The organisation PETA Europe, dedicated to establishing and protecting the rights of all animals, has written to Pet Shop Boys with a request they are unable to agree to but nonetheless think raises an issue worth thinking about."
Nonetheless, PETA is pleased: "As if you needed another reason to love the Pet Shop Boys besides 'West End Girls.'"
