They are not praised and lauded, they have been subject to criticism within the black community as well; the degrading portrayal of women and the rejection of it is why they don't run BET Uncut anymore. And profits for rap music have declined 20% this year off last year. The lyrics of rappers have always been criticized, but they're profitable because they appeal to young males.
